On the Easel – Smarty

First stage is to take LOTS of photos. These are just a few of the photos I took before I got the one I was happy with.

The photo above was the final choice, I liked the composition and the soft but alert look in her eyes. I might regret this when I have to draw the cat-bed though! Normally I avoid drawing “things” and stick to the animals!

This is the initial sketch. No detail, just the basic outline.

I always start on the left hand side of the drawing; normally the ear and work my way downwards. I protect the paper under my sketching hand with a loose sheet of paper, any oil from the hand can effect a drawing.

In this case I then moved down to the eye, now have to work on joining the two sections. This is the very first “layer” of the drawing, there is only basic detail, mainly just establishing light and shade. I always work dark to light.

Am continuing with the basics – finding the black, tan and white areas.

Now have completed the first layer and established the basics of the complete body. Unfortunately the next step is the bed!

It was at the stage of starting the bed that I was regretting including it. However Smarty loves sitting in her bed, so it is a typical pose of hers. I will keep the detail on the bed to the minimum as I want the emphasis to be on Smarty. Have faded out one side of the bed to keep it looking “arty” and not predictable.

Now have completed the basics of the whole portrait and will start on the all important detail.

The next stages are very hard to show in photographs, the changes are quite subtle but so important.

Every section is now re-worked gaining in detail as I go. I deepened and worked on the dark colours in Smarty’s coat, starting at her left ear working downwards, to her eye and her back. Next part will be the white in her coat, which actually takes a lot more shading then you would think – it can’t be just left white.

Have purposely left the bed “loose” as I want Smarty to be the centre of focus. Now am at the stage of analysing and checking, this is the third and final stage. Have just realised I have forgotten to do her tag and bell!

On the Easel – Tonka

TONKA

This head portrait is going to be a surprise gift for a lady in Australia; the gentleman who is giving the gift, had fun and games trying to get the photographs taken in secret. Am so pleased we waited until he got this great photo, I love the expression on Tonka’s face – certainly a cat with attitude!

Now of course the most difficult colour to portray is black; especially black with no other markings! So Tonka will indeed make me work hard. However I so love the  intense look in the eyes, that is going to be the challenge, trying to recreate that on paper.

I have just started with a very rough sketch. At this stage I don’t know how much shoulder I am going to include, I do not want to detract away from the eyes. I think I will complete the face and see how the composition works.

Next stage is finding the light and shade. Even though Tonka is completely black, there are still different shades in his coat. It is these  shades which will stop the portrait looking flat and bring it to life.

 

This really is a puss with attitude! I have now completed the establishment of light and dark. This is still at the sketch stage though with no detail or refining.

Have started the detail work on the left ear working downwards.

Initial depth of colour and light areas now established – has a cute white nose at the moment, will blend later!  Will now start again at the top left ear and work the detail – blending, darkening and lightening. This is the bit I enjoy, when all the structure is in place and I can move on to the finer points. At the moment am still liking it as an intense ‘gaze’ portrait without the shoulder.

Deepening, blending and fine detail have started on the left-side of the face.

Final stage coming up. Everything is  almost complete, I now step back -  debate, correct, improve. The changes are very small but very important.

Handsome intense Tonka finished. Don’t mess with the black cat! Wish I lived in Australia and could meet him.

The Shitzu Gang

These little dogs were my biggest and most difficult project to date. They live in Dubai and were all rescued by an English lady.

Introducing Bella, Elvis, Harry, Archie, Priscella and Charlie (need to find his original photo). It took two very hot (it was summer) photo shoots before we achieved good workable photos of each dog. This meant a lot of time on the floor as they are so small and of course they didn’t want to stay still! Then the challenge was to organise the drawing in a way that was pleasing to the eye, I didn’t want to feel I was cramming all six on the page.

 

At this stage I am well and truly under way, just two little dogs to go!

 

Here they are all finished…phew!!!

On The Easel – Tilly

STARTING POINT

Tilly, a beautiful ginger tabby.

Tilly is proving much trickier then I initially thought. Those wonderful ginger stripes of hers all have to be found and added in the right place! At the moment that is the stage I am at, just placing everything in the right place, detail will come later. She has such an intense look on her face!

All the stripes have been “found” and detail work has started on the left-side of her face.

Continuing to deepen the shadows and work on the stripes. Starting to get some depth into the drawing, working from the left-side moving towards her bottom.

All the basics are in place, now my favourite part starts – the final detail.

Have been working on the fur on Tilly’s back. Have added a reflective shadow on the floor in front of her to “ground” the portrait. Am at the stage of perfecting and working shadow and light areas.

                      

Tilly is finished! Have got to the stage when I must put the pencil down and stop; it is tempting to keep fiddling. I kept the very intense look because that obviously is one of her traits.
